i'm still working on the free art i'm including in shop orders from last week. if this applies to you, i think all packages are going out this afternoon or tomorrow morning. the pieces are almost complete but i want to make sure the paint is all dry before i slip them in the packages.

in other news:

i made emily dickinson's coconut cake which turned out kind of hard and dry but that hasn't stopped me from cutting the frosting layer off the top and eating that with my hands. there are crumbs all around my feet as i type. the dog just started licking them up. also, i'm watching this documentary right now and i really like it. i think you can watch it all on you tube as well.

i guess that's it. tired brain. can't think of anything else.

the woods and hills on either side of me are home to a pack of coyotes. i woke up at 3:30 the other morning to their howling and woofing and frenzy. i sat by the window for a few minutes and listened. it was a cold night and i'm sure they were happy to eat. the noise they make when they've made a kill is mesmerizing. i almost feel i'm there in the dark forest or in a clearing. i imagine how they corner an animal, closing in on it. after reading books about how brutal it can be for deer to make it through the winter, especially the weak, the old and the young, i feel a heaviness. still, when i imagine the scene it's the coyote's mind i inhabit.

there's a stray cat living here named socrates. food and water are left for him on the porch but he spends even the coldest nights outdoors. he's got a stump for a tail and he's surprisingly chubby for his scrappy lifestyle. i wondered if the coyotes had finally gotten him but just now i saw him dart across the driveway.

my plan this weekend is to reacquaint myself with paper and paint. above are a couple paintings of mine from a lifetime ago. i've been needing to make some pictures so i'm going to dive in today.

as for my 2012 reading, i've begun a handful of books in the past couple weeks but haven't become attached enough to any to continue past the second chapter. i did read about 1/2 of thoreau's walden. i don't think i've ever read it in it's entirety. but i'm putting it down for now.

at first i was going to muscle through each book i pick up no matter what as a way of challenging myself and cultivating some reading discipline. but that worked better in theory than in practice. i tried starting those books i have on my shelves which i keep intending to read, thinking that i have enough material here to keep me busy for the year.

but then yesterday, feeling uninspired and wanting to get into a book, needing really to be absorbed by another world, i stopped at the library after dropping my outgoing packages at the post office.

i came home with 2 titles i had scrawled in my notebook. the first i started last night is this life is in your hands by melissa coleman. coleman is the daughter of garden guru eliot coleman and this book is a memoir of her childhood growing up in maine next door to helen and scott nearing. there is tragedy in the book and an intimate recounting of homesteading in the 70s.

if you know me at all you know that this is a world i feel like i've inhabited, maybe in some parallel universe. i've read about it enough. i've dreamed about it enough. and now at this point in my life i think it's probably an experience which will remain within the boundaries of my imagination.

ok, BUSINESS. i've been working on some jewelry for enhabiten. the first series is called "copper canyon" named for the scrap of 1970s leather i used which is from copper canyon.

here's a picture of the place. it's really beautiful:

also used for this series: hand-dyed vintage string, japanese braided, and some other bits including a sterling silver feather pendant which is real sweet. i hope you like these.

also put a new dyed vintage tablecloth in the shop and some of my rough cut handmade olive oil soap. there's a limited quantity of this but if it goes quick i will make some more. i used to make soap for an earlier business from a lifetime ago called "worthwhile soap company" and i miss it sometimes.

my picks at the local auction place.

i haven't been to an auction in ages. two reasons: i can't afford it and i've recently purged down to a minimum of stuff around here. but i still like to look. and someday i will see that perfect old rug and i will do some bidding again. i like playing the bidding game. i even had a dream about it last night. me, just sitting there, bidding. at least that's all i recall.

wouldn't it be weird, so weird, to see a recording of a night's dreams? every single one. all the details and full stories you've completely forgotten?? it may be a little too mind-blowing, no?

do you remember i was on a jag of reading about dream theory and recording my dreams some months ago. it seemed especially peculiar that your brain is set up to forget dreams upon waking. within a matter of seconds a dream dissipates. even moving your body, stretching, does something to hasten the forgetting.

on drives or walks in the summertime i always notice home vegetable gardens. when i spy them i get a surge of emotion- a combination of curiosity, pride, kinship, hope. i want to walk each garden to see what's flourishing, what's succumbing to insect or disease, find out if the gardener is new to it or if they've been raising tomatoes since their grandma taught them how. mostly i want them to know the pleasure i get with just a glimpse of their work in the dirt. it means something to me.

growing your own food and eating locally and in season is a popular ideal right now and i'm glad of it. i refuse to think in negative terms- that it's a passing fad or hipster idealism.

years ago i started a farmers' market in my hometown. i've developed relationships with farms and farmers in my area and my oldest son has worked for a few years at a local off grid organic farm. it's an experience and relationship that will be with him the rest of his life i am sure. i'm proud to have had a hand in that.

this documentary is playing at my local theater and i plan to go see it. maybe you'll go see it, too.

hey good morning.

it's cold and just a few snowflakes are falling outside my window. i did my photo taking and shop stocking early so that i can have a craft session at lunchtime with ethan, eli and courtney. we're doing some stamp-carving.

i found myself craving minestrone soup yesterday as i ran errands, so i made a giant pot last night and i'm going to heat that up for everybody today. when i cook i often scan recipes but then make the dish with the book closed. i guess i use recipes mostly for reference unless it's something fancy i'm not at all familiar with or when i'm baking something more complicated than sweet bread. this pot of soup had these ingredients: turkey stock i made after christmas, onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes, kidney beans, kale, canned tomatoes, and parmesan and romano cheeses. i think i will add some hot pepper flakes to my bowl today.

i went to the doctor's today for a physical. super fun. the doctor took one look at my infected finger and said i needed an antibiotic and if the swelling doesn't go down in a few days i could need IV antibiotics!!!! and i had to get a tetnus shot!!!

(in real life i'm real stoic and have a high pain threshold but here on the blog i like to ramp up the drama.)

i just mixed up some pumpkin bread and tossed in (no measuring at casa enhabiten) a lot of chilli powder instead of cinnamon. duh. i'm baking it anyway. how bad could it be?? will report back.

there was some great fog new year's eve day when i went for a walk. i think my phone captured it pretty well. these were taken down the road and in a valley near my place.

i'm typing now with a swollen finger. yesterday as i was trying to set up my new printer i somehow stabbed myself with a knife. (here's a picture of the event.) don't even ask the chain of events...it's a a little muddy. i do recall the steam coming out of my eyeballs because the printer and computer weren't cooperating so whatever i was cutting i'm sure i was doing so with some, shall we say, passion. i think my finger is infected. crap.

also, the cat is on the counter lapping old green tea out of my mug with her paw. we have no standards here. cats on our counter; dogs in our beds.

also last night, perhaps psychically linked with my printer frustration, i purged all sorts of stuff from my little baby house. i was feeling claustrophobic. everything is off the walls and the shelves are bare. i'm selling it all in the shop today. crazy? nay, bold and fearless!

ps- i really enjoyed reading the first half of dracula but i'm in the final 25 pgs. or so and i'm forcing myself to finish. the second half dragged like a queen!

do you have plans to welcome the new year?

i can't say that i do. although i might start an outdoor fire, write up a list of things from the past year i want to say goodbye to and toss it in. let it go.

i've been living a real solitary life this week with my kids not home. except the radio and a couple episodes of "ny ink" last night there's been a lot of quiet and hush. i've been reading "dracula" and working and puttering around.

it's cold here and my hot water pipes froze again. the many squirrels who have taken residence in the walls of this place are scratching up a lot of noise.

today i'll clean a little, go for a walk and continue working on some new things for the shop. some are variations of what i already make and some brand new. i'm working out kinks and hope to make them just what i envision in my head. i'm trying to be patient.

i got sucked into the black hole of japanese clothing sites earlier and came out the other side in paris. i swear to god it's a good thing this stuff is not readily available to me. you know like, i could zoom over to target and throw a pile in the cart or something.

i actually have a small small wardrobe. calling it a wardrobe is misleading. cut off sweatpants and stretched out bras and stained t-shirts....what category does that stuff fit into? did i hear someone yell rags?? haha. very funny.

i've been wearing the same ensemble every day lately which involves pants that are leggings but heavier and with a pocket on the butt so i can justify going out in public in them. (yes, they sound suspiciously like sweatpants, however j crew refers to them as the "saturday pant" so that's what we're gonna go with.) somehow that pocket makes it a-okay. super comfy with an elastic waistband. hells yeah, pass me another slice o' pizza.

ANYWAY,

i've been dyeing fabric outside in the freezing cold and wind. i also already went for a walk. and now i'm sitting here all like, ho-di-doh, what should i do with myself? cleaning got crossed off the list right quick. i guess i'll go make something with the sewing machine.

good morning!

guess what? i'm in a pretty good mood. i started my walking routine a few days ago and i got back with my yoga practice last night. i'm sore this morning but not too bad and it felt so natural to be doing yoga again.

in other news:

that painting up there is by my boy ethan. it was my christmas present. i love it and the photo doesn't do it justice.

i made 10 pounds of olive oil soap recently as you can see up there. i thought it wasn't setting right but I think it's turning out ok. olive oil soap takes a long time to cure, or sit before you can use it. I'll let it be for a month then try it out.

i've been doing some purifying with sage in the cabin (wack shack).

last picture is of some handmade socks that are flipping unbelievable. beautiful and soft. i got them via a trade with a blog reader, emily. she spun the white yarn at the toe and notice the perfect little cable running down the side. i'm lucky.

new year's promises to myself: i'm going to try and walk most everyday like i used to and i'm going to get back to yoga class. i'm also going to pay off some debts and get myself a passport. lastly, i'm going to take my reading seriously. i started a column over there on the right; a list of books to which i will add titles as i finish each. i want to look over the list now and then and think about the books, try and recall details, remember the images i had in my head of the places and people. the book project is about a larger struggle i have with myself that i see clearly in how i read. i find that my natural inclination is to fly through a book and even if i love it i seldom think it over after i'm through or even remember names and places and stories.

what do you hope to pay more attention to in the new year?

i've been working today. it's a quiet, COLD, VERY COLD sunday.

my hot water pipes froze. i'm in denial about it. which is, i probably don't need to tell you, not a wise position to take. the dishes are piling up. i'm just asking the powers that be that the pipes not explode.

the music's been good. i've got my ipod on shuffle. it seems every song that comes on is exactly the song i want to hear at that moment.

i went antiquing with a friend yesterday and found that vintage blue floral material up there. i washed, dried, and sewed it up lickety-split. it's happy fabric. with nice colors. happy and nice. i also found that scale and it's got good lines and a great color. IMO. and i've been sewing up some arm warmers. all in the shop.

if i had to rate this weekend i'd have to give it a solid 8.

Ethan and I went to the tattoo shop today.

It's become an annual trip which I look forward to.

This time I just got some dot tattoos on my fingers. I have them on my left hand and Ethan got them on his right. (That was his idea, btw, to get them on opposite hands and it seemed so sweet to me that he wanted to do this with his Mumma.) He got a larger tattoo on his inner upper arm. I took a few pictures of it on my phone but living out here in the backwoods it's taking an eon for the images to be sent from my phone to my computer. I'll post them on my flickr for sure and hopefully take some better pictures of it and show you one here.

Ethan's girlfriend, Courtney, came along this time as well. She's spending a number of months in Ghana very soon and I imagine how monumental this trip could be for her and I'm proud of her and excited to learn and experience it vicariously. She's a fabulous girl.

lovely backyard space, no? lately i've been missing keeping chickens. i gave my last group to a friend when i moved in april. last night as i was trying to fall asleep i was thinking about them. it was a real cold night and i was wondering if they were ok. especially i was thinking about the hen i called B. she was the one born with the crooked beak, remember? it gave her this look of perpetual questioning, of "you said what??" and her little deformity endeared her to me and made me feel protective.

someday i bet i will have more layer hens but probably never another B.

i thought i would have some black cowl scarves, jersey and fleece, in the shop today but that's up in the air at this point. they are washing&drying currently and everything hinges on model availability. my daughter has stuff to do, apparently, beyond posing for me. you would think once you birth a being, you know, give them the ULTIMATE GIFT OF LIFE, they would do whatever you want and whenever you want.

when the power goes out

soooo,

i woke up this morning at 6:30 AM and realized the power had gone out during the night. first thing i did was heat water on the gas stove for coffee (hallelujah for that stove). second thing i did was rearrange the furniture (? i'm so weird). third thing i did was put a "no flushing" sign on the toilet handle. fourth thing i did was some mending and darning. then the power went on at 9:30 AM and i immediately grabbed the computer like a junkie.

i also took a picture of myself wherein i look like a psycho killer. or at least a psycho killer in training. but i took it to illustrate the fact that my hair is getting longer! i know, that's what hair does, bfd. but also, i wanted to admit to you that i watched some hair-do how to videos on you tube the other day. and all of a sudden i'm like, "omg, hair teasing is such a useful and versatile technique!!" teasing prior to pony-tailing really makes the look work, girls.

MORNING!

i'm looking forward to this weekend. i want it to be a slow, productive, quiet couple of days. i have faith that it will be so.

i'm big on solitude. i can be by myself for long stretches and feel perfectly comfortable. it's in those times my mind slows down and i am most creative. i need a lot of space and time to reach my full potential.

i remember reading about some iconic artist who happened also to be a woman and a mother. i thought it may have been louise bourgeois but i'm doubting this now. anyway, this woman said she was perfectly comfortable in the studio working all day with her kids by her side. even then, as a 19 yo college kid, i thought, phew, really?? sounds complicated.

and now i feel like i have to make all sorts of qualifications out of mother guilt like, don't think i don't love my kids and i'm not saying i like working over parenting and if you, my kids are reading, i love you to all eternity so please don't misunderstand.

i remember back when my oldest kids were maybe 4 & 5 years old. they were 20 months apart. and i rented a small studio space to paint in. my husband was in graduate school and i worked part time jobs and we were broke.

i often had to bring my kids to the studio with me and it usually ended in disaster. i was distracted and impatient and frustrated and they sometimes ended up crying. i left feeling a failure at both.

complicated, indeed.

anyway, my point is, i'm a person, who spent the last 20 years mothering, who really really likes her solitude in order to be her best creative self. this conflict and this conversation is one of the biggest in my life i think. being both things, a born creative with a bent for personal space and a mom, and not knowing how to manage any of it gracefully.

did you know i had no intention or knowledge i was going to write about this when i started here?? goofball. but there you have it. i certainly welcome your thoughts in the comments. i always read your comments, by the way. and i suspect that many of you are moms and creative folk so this may resonate.

so anyway back to ME. heh. i haven't had a bed of my own for a few weeks now. and my old back is feeling it with moving around from bed to sofa etc. i never take pain meds but i downed some ibuprofen this morning so i could stop focussing on back pain and get to work.

my daughter, olivia, moved back in with me recently and i've been trying to get the large upstairs room here set up as two separate spaces for eli and me so liv can have the room that was formerly mine. to that end, i got a couple of painter's canvas drop cloths and some big screw hooks and some grommets and i'm going to make a fabric room divider. could turn out a little college dorm room but we'll see.

i also ordered myself a new futon and i'm trying to figure a platform for it before it gets here. i saw a pile of old wood pallets in a yard down the road and maybe i'll knock on the door and see if maybe the owner doesn't want those pallets. anyone ever use these for a bed platform?

and before you start snoozing or move on to the next blog, i want to tell you i got this antique dresser recently for $26! my price range. but then i found a variety of antique drawer pulls on etsy and decided to order them for the dresser. thus nullifying my thrift. when i get my bedroom together and if it doesn't suck i'll take some pics for you to see.

yesterday was appointments and errands, shipping packages and making candied nuts for neighbors. i'm actually real happy to NOT be a part of the community around me in my neighborhood right now. this april i moved from the town i grew up in and i'm still dealing with the fallout of feeling claustrophobic from all that's entailed in living in a small town where EVERYONE knows EVERYONE. i just needed a break from it.

BUT, a week or so ago the neighbors here helped me to try and track down my mother's missing dog when i showed up all out of breath and frantic on their doorsteps at dinnertime, no less. so i owe them one. i may be antisocial but i'm not entirely socially inept.

which brings to my mind something COMPLETELY unrelated but i'll share it with you. i was listening to the radio yesterday and some double bass music came on briefly. i freaking love the double bass. if i could get my act together i would learn how to play the double bass and the accordian. funny combo.

yesterday, i pushed my bed up to a window. this morning the first thing i saw when i opened my eyes was a brilliant sunrise. this is just a hint of it because it faded fast.

in order to take a picture i took the bathroom screen out, climbed on top of a chair and then the sink and stuck my head out the window. in the process, i discovered this multi-colored metal roof on a hidden spot on my house. mimics the color of the sunrise, the birches and the snow. more roofs should look like this, me thinks.

i also woke to a vivid dream. i was running with a pack of deer. the dogs were there romping as well; general merriment. it seems we were all in a large field which brought to mind not the woods but the landscape at a boarding school i went to one year. i went to a lot of (different) schools. i'm a gemini. we are a quicksilver sort.

my specific heaven will include running with my dog and a pack of deer. what would yours be like?

how was your day yesterday?

we spent a chunk of time in the car, me and my kids. we listened to lotsa rap. we saw a deer and we saw a store sign which read: just oil....and more (i couldn't stop laughing).

do you know i don't have a passport?! it's a real crying shame. i've traveled in canada and been to puerto rico. i've flown to the west coast and to florida (of all places. sorry if you live in florida. where i visited just wasn't for me).

i am sitting here in the early morning appreciating the cool winter light. i am also listening to the noises of a sleeping house. i hear the dog snoring on the sofa, the hum of the refrigerator, lots of scratching in the walls from squirrels and mice making themselves at home. but mostly i am hearing my daughter sleep fitfully. i wake her once to ask if she is having a bad dream. she says no and falls back to sleep. she goes back to her bad dream and her tossing and turning.

it took me a long time to realize your kids go lots of places you cannot go. you can only ask them about it and hope they can tell you.
