Boro Textiles, Painting and Handsewn

Looking at traditional Japanese country textiles is a thrill for me. Even though the reason and impulse behind the stitch work is utilitarian I have a hard time believing there wasn't a creative impulse at work. I read that there was embarrasment with these pieces because it indicated the maker's rural and poor status. This is so hard for me to understand because there is nothing but soulful stitching and patchwork to me.

This weekend I started working on some small textile art pieces called "Handsewn"and it didn't take long for me to realize the similarities between what I was making and the boro textiles I love to look at. The fabric pictures are worked in much the same way I paint, just a different material. With the fabric, I have the added benefit of being able to seam rip a piece up if I don't like the placement and try again. With paint, there is often a chance I will overwork an area or an entire painting. Here is an image of my textile work as well as a couple paintings.
