babette's feast

Babette's Feast is one of my all-time favorite movies. Here's a New York Time's summary with a link to a review. This is a movie I watch over and over.

It's one of my favorite movies too. It's so quiet and beautiful. And the feast looks so fantastic!

Here's a little story about Babette's Feast:

(A little background might help first. My parents don't EVER see movies in the theater. Well, hardly ever. Before seeing Babette's Feast with them in 1988 I only ever remember seeing Freaky Friday in 1976, the original Star Wars in 1976, and Popeye in 1980 with them. That's all. They had my brother take me to see E.T. in 1982.)

So, when Babette's Geast came out in theaters in the U.S., soemhow my mom heard about it and insisted we all go see it, she, my dad, my older brother, and I.

There we were, sitting in one of the little theaters in the University District of Seattle, waiting for the movie to start, and my mom turns to my dad and asks something to the effect of, "Isn't this the building where we met?"

Sure enough, it was. It had been a dance hall in the early 60's when they met at a Norwegian christmas party there.

The point? While i do remember liking the film, I don't really remember a whole lot about it, but I DO remember finding out that little tidbit about my parents life pre-children.

I'm off to put it on the Netflix queue right now!
