i'm really inspired by this jewelry made by fiber artist and weaver kay sekimachi. the last two images make me think of brice marden's cold mountain paintings.
they have always been some of the most beautiful things to me. here's a video of marden talking about painting:
it is so important to be able to see, search out, reference other makers and artists. i feel lost when i get out of touch with listening to and looking at art. other artists help me find my way and reassure me that this thing of making is not meaningless. that expressing through art is searching for meaning in life.
which brings me to think about this- when i am not surrounded by people who believe that art is an essential i get anxious; i can't do the work i'm driven to do. part of being an artist is creating the environment for yourself where you can do your work.

They do look like those Brice Marden paintings...beautiful! And I know exactly what you mean about getting anxious when not in touch with art and those who value it...it's the same for me. I know what we do is not meaningless, but it can start to feel that way when you are in a different sphere. The world very much needs artists to create....it's our calling. Thanks for this blog!

I know exactly what you mean. I've been feeling the need to revamp my environments, contexts, and connections to be regularly exposed to other makers, artists and believers. It's a work in progress, but its so essential.
First I want to say that I feel exactly the same way about art. As a working artist, it is so important to create an environment and surround yourself with what inspired and motivates you! Second, I just read an article about Kay and fell head over heels in LOVE with her weaving! I have been working my way towards some incorporated weaveing (now just need the time!)...
I am so happy you posted about her because I saw an article in a magazine while I was in the White Mountains this weekend and meant to come home and post about her... Needless to say, I got distracted, so thank you so much for reminding me!!!
so well captured. surrounding myself by those who can appreciate me and my art has been a turning point for me. thank you for all your encouragement liane. xoxo Mandy
Did you read the cover story about her in American Craft? I just about fell over when I saw it at the library. The images are so beautiful.

As always, wonderful post!
Liane, Thanks very much for posting about these two artists whose work is so very beautiful, and also for your thoughts...which I understand completely. Best...Gloria
Thank you for those wise words... I sometimes get anxious and uninspired without really understanding what is going on with me. Now i realize that it is when i become isolated, not surrounded by creativity...feeling like i don't belong... Thank you for the inspiration!
