large one filled with green cotton stuffing, smaller with balsam and buckwheat hulls.  both crosses made with hand-dyed vintage cotton.

You can now find a selection of enhabiten cross pillows at Sword and Fern in Portland, Oregon. I wish I wasn't on the opposite coast because this looks like my sort of shop. Sword and Fern carries my friend Alice's Forestbound bags as well. And Emily, the shop owner, makes her own line of jewelry. I especially like this necklace.

1924, aged 34

I found this old crazy quilt a couple weeks ago. I love that it's signed and dated. The woman who made it even embroidered her age, 34. Although I know there are plenty of good things about the time period we live in now, I wish we took greater care with the things around us. I see such thoughtfulness in the things that were made in the past from old homes to crafts.

I hesitated repurposing this old quilt but it really has seen better times. And by using it to make something else I am carrying on a tradition I admire of reusing, recycling, repurposing. My hope is that by spreading this old quilt around I will encourage others to appreciate it's beauty and the ideas it represents.

old & new

The scent of dried balsam is one of my favorites and is inextricably linked to this time of year and to New England for me. I've started adding balsam to the cross pillows in my shop. You can still get them with lavender but now you have a choice of 2 totally yummy aromatherapy experiences.
