home nine a.m. tuesday march

Eli is home sick with a cough and sore throat.  Jazzie is keeping him company.  Top picture-  my antler guy found me a match to the first moose antler he got me.  Now I just need to figure out how to mount them. Second picture down- apparently the state of NH no longer allows you to purchase less than 12 chickens since they are flock birds and they are happiest in a larger group.  Remember this post where I got all huffy about chickens?  Well, I HAD to order a dozen. Hahahaha.  I got 6 auracanas and 6 buff orpingtons.

Get well to Eli! You know, you stair case looks so much like mine but our stairs are red. And yes, yay for chickens! Our neighbor has some that occasionally come over to our yard and it is always a moment of joy when I see them out there.

I had to look up images of the two chickens species you mentioned, to see what they look like.
Araucanas lay blue eggs, that's pretty cool. You should photo document the arrival of the chickens ... I am a city guy, you know. (I have no idea how chickens are shipped for instance ....)

Liane,
I like the new photos of your house. I am home from work today working on a couple custom quilts and decided to take a break from sewing and enjoy your blog. My son has been keeping chickens, we are enjoying the eggs and have even given some away. I just love the natural brown color although I would like for him to get a couple araucanas for the blue eggs. I've taken several photos of his eggs, they look so healthy. We found thru trial and error not to feed cracked corn (corn chops) because that only makes fat. We have been buying an organic laying feed and adding crushed oyster shell for grit, and we immediately started getting eggs. It was exciting for me, a city girl, to harvest eggs.

Hope your son is feeling well soon and thanks again for the great pics.
Take care,
Lisa

Hope Eli is feeling better pronto. Yay, Buff Orpingtons! I tried many different breeds, but the buffs, and Barred Rocks(black-n-white speckley) were my favorite. 2 of my gals, Buttercup (Buff)and Henrietta(Barred Rock that were inseparable friends- so smart and hilarious. They outlasted all of the others, even when *gasp* a raccoon got the others. Just remember if you ordered 12 chicks, you'll likely end up with about 6 hens. Tis sad, but nature is harsh.
