agnes richter

\

laurent reminded me of agnes richter and her embroidered jacket and i can't believe i'd forgotten about it.  the stitchwork is incredibly moving and provocative even without knowing the details of the story.

"...Agnes Richter...was confined to an asylum in the late 1800s. There she constructed a jacket from pieces of the institutional uniform, then painstakingly stitched a mysterious autobiographical text into every inch of the inside and outside of the jacket."

*quote taken from here.

Yes, Agnes Richter's work is fascinating. If you want to learn more about her and how she created her amazing jacket, check out my book, AGNES'S JACKET: A PSYCHOLOGIST'S SEARCH FOR THE MEANINGS OF MADNESS (for more information, see my website, www.gailhornstein.com).
