tonight

new things in the shop tonight
...
and now i'm headed out to a friend's house for dinner.  we dug up the last of our potatoes, carrots and onions today and we're bringing a big plate of roasted root vegetables with sage and rosemary to share. oh, and a big bottle of cheap red wine!  i hope you're having a great night.

it's a big vegetable garden i'm working on this year.  we're eating a variety of greens almost every day right now.  there's also some space devoted to growing some dye plants.  i'm looking forward to having a diet filled with as much homegrown food as possible.
...

and the highlight of my birthday weekend was seeing devendra banhart in boston on friday night at the wilbur theater.  it was so good.  rodrigo amarante opened for him and he was terrific.  we also happened to get tickets to see the avett brothers for saturday night and that was fun but it was a bigger venue and production and i gotta say that compared to a smaller avett show i went to a few years ago it was not as satisfying.  have you seen any live music lately?  got any recommendations or complaints?

pure pleasures

cashmere
such a good idea!

...
and don't forget about the HAPPYNEWYEAR coupon code in my shop for 25% off everything including already discounted goods.
...

and here are the promises i'm making to myself for this wonderful fresh start we are given in a 2011 new year:

-i used to walk 3-5 miles almost everyday and i'm promising myself to ease back into that.
-i promise to continue educating myself about what's going on in the world beyond my house, town, country both past and present with books like this and this.
-i just ordered seed catalogs and i'm making a promise to  make my vegetable garden a priority this spring and summer because i believe growing my own food and feeding my family and friends with it are profound acts of political and social importance (how's that for grandiose?) and also that digging in the earth is one of the purest pleasures in life.

with love,
liane

small moments

crooked beak is the least skittish of my bunch of hens.  here she is:

i'm thinking i should call her something else though.  i don't want her to feel defined by her weird deformity.
name suggestions are welcome.

and here's the rest of the sillies.  they like to hang under the mock orange bush:

that's major *sshole in the center.  he's been crowing like a madman.  and trying to hump all the ladies whenever he gets the chance. they shun his advances.  as far as roosters go, however, he's not such a bad guy.  he doesn't try to peck me or get all alpha when i'm around.

and here is one of three giant boxes of tomatoes i'm canning today.  wish me luck.  it's gonna be an all day affair:

and here are the grapes growing in my backyard soon to be jam:

one of my favorite smells on this earth are ripe grapes on the vine.  when i go for walks there are places along the way where they grow roadside.  as soon as i smell them it makes me smile and feel relaxed.

i'm most grateful for those small things.  small moments of beauty.

i hope you have a good good day.
love, me
