this week

hi folks!

i don't think that i've mentioned i'm on instagram now.
you can click the instagram button there on the right to see enhabiten and follow.

the past week i've brought flowers inside, kept my eye on the field out back to appreciate the changing season and the changing light, got a beautiful orchid from my daughter olivia, visited my son ethan here, where he is the new resident farmer, and of course worked on some dyeing outdoors.

i've put a couple handfuls of new things in the sale section of the shop just now.  you'll find indigo dyed shirts, watercolor pillows and more.

take care and i hope you have some great moments this weekend.

this that

two dyed hemp scarves and a set of napkins just went into the shop.

i'm speed-baking a homemade birthday cake (chocolate with buttercream frosting) for my kid and running over to the farmers' market now.

satisfying work, sadness and joy

good morning!
happy memorial day, folks.

it's a holiday but my shop has been closed long enough and it's time to stock it with the new things i've been working on.  first up, these soft organic cotton hemp light weight jersey scarves made in small batches with natural and foraged dye materials.  i've saved some for myself and i've been wearing them a lot on cooler days and in the evening.  i love the light weight and i'm sure i'll be wearing them all spring and summer.  these are a bit longer and wider than some of my previous infinity scarves.  i wrap them around 3 times and i think i've finally gotten the width and length just right.  there are 3 greys (because i love each shade and they wear well with any outfit) and a new mustard color.

also, on a personal note, you know from the previous posts there has been great sadness in my life.  thank you all for the kind messages and emails about michael.  he will always remain in my heart.  but as life goes, there has also been great joy.  my oldest child, ethan, my boy and my kindred creative, just graduated from art school.  he's a painter and a farmer and a man with a full and kind heart.  i love him and i'm so proud to know him.

beautiful animal

my son ethan and i went for a walk in the woods today.   we traveled from the old covered bridge and along the river away from town and toward the place i live now.  we ended up in a beautiful field.  the weather felt too warm for late november but it also felt too good to disagree with.  it's hunting season and as we crossed the steel bridge a pick up passed by with a small deer in the truck bed.

The Beautiful Animal

BY GEOFFREY BROCK
By the time I recalled that it is also
terrifying, we had gone too far into
the charmed woods to return. It was then

the beautiful animal appeared in our path:
ribs jutting, moon-fed eyes moving
from me to you and back. If we show

none of the fear, it may tire of waiting
for the triggering flight, it may ask only
to lie between us and sleep, fur warm

on our skin, breath sweet on our necks
as it dreams of slaughter, as we dream
alternately of feeding and taming it

and of being the first to run. The woods
close tight around us, lying nested here
like spoons in a drawer of knives, to see

who wakes first, and from which dream.

weekend

morning.
weekend: i drove to boston with ethan.  and i finally picked up my bike from the old house.  it's been months since i stopped going to my yoga class and i need to move my body again.  hopefully having the bike helps.  i also tried to pick peaches but the season just ended.  good thing apple season lasts awhile.   i've already got a big bag of apples picked  but i'll go again soon.  the orchard we went to last week was just beautiful.  i'd heard a rumor that the apple crop wasn't great this year but you could've fooled me...the trees were covered in perfect fruit.

we went to the aquarium friday.  eli wanted to see the anacondas.  i'm partial to the jellyfish.  we got to visit ethan's painting studio.  we ate junk food all day.  the seals made us laugh.

yesterday i went to yoga, went for a walk, went to the dump aka the transfer station.  i picked up a copy of hemingway's the sun also rises in the swap shop.   i've never read it, started it last night, and really like it so far.

do you not live in small town usa?  do you not go to the dump and visit the swap shop?  when i mention these things do you laugh or wonder what the hell i'm talking about?

life through art

the old backyard.

can you see the raised beds i built myself?  i spent two weeks hauling compost with a wheelbarrow from the road out front, past the house and up the hill to fill 9 beds.  there's a giant japanese anemone in the center of the garden.

it's not an idyllic space.  i don't romanticize it.  the picket fence is rotting and falling down,  the chickens wreaked havoc on the grass, some years there were more weeds in the beds than vegetables.

ethan visited yesterday and i snapped pictures of his sketchbook.  i love this drawing of his.  i tried editing down these photographs but i could not.  the repetition of images makes me feel like i am in the space.  like a flip book or a moving picture.

i identify with ethan's mark-making and the way he sees things and translates them onto paper.   i share his wish to understand life through art.

here's a picture of ethan's tattoo of that giant maple.
and the yard at sunrise.
