jude silas arlo finn

morning to you!
i had an eventful weekend with the birth of a nephew on saturday.  i was present at the birth (3rd time for me not counting my own kids) and it's an incredible experience every. single. time.  he's yet to have a name but some in the running are jude, silas, arlo, finn...

naming children is one of my favorite activities.  good thing raising them is, er, a challenge at times because otherwise the draw of coming up with new names might have resulted in a posse of babes for me.  in the end 3 seems just right.  however yesterday i was daydreaming about a little newborn named hazel.  daydreaming is free, right?

'sup

do you want to hear something totally gross?

i found a dead decomposing mouse in my house the other day.  it was under the stairs in a storage space.  there were maggots involved.  gag.  TMI?  it's just that i can't shoulder the experience all by my lonesome.  i'm no baby but believe me when i tell you i am sparing you the vomity details.  sorry.  here, take this memory eraser pill and call me in the morning.

and i don't know why i sometimes have to lead with a barfy story on this blog.  and then launch into something else more pleasant particularly when it involves an internet friend who's super kind.  i've done this before.  but anyway anyway anyway...katherine sent me the vintage boots in the first picture just to be nice.  and they fit perfect and i flipping love them.  thanks katherine!  i'm scheming a return care package for you as i type.

the leather case and gooseneck lamp were recently purchased to resell but i'm feeling temporarily attached.  need to gaze upon them for a bit before i offer them in the shop.

and last night i reduced the price of my indigo pillows.  these are personal favorites and i'd love to see them find homes.  visit the shop to take a closer look.  very shortly i will start listing my new things...some pillows, some bags, some wearables, lots of hand-dyed black.  yip!

dear momma

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite Christmas gifts. My son Ethan, my little artist prodigy spawn (heehee), made me a mixed CD. We share the same music taste and he is also a musician so he's always finding great music I may not have unearthed myself. But the music on the CD is not the only great part of the gift. He also typed me a note and playlist and put it all in an old map envelope. Because presentation is important, peoples.
Here are some vids from the artists he included. First a Bondy one:

Makes you want to play the harmonic, no?
And then we have Joanna Newsom because I can't help myself. Will you please pay attention to the lyrics? I think she is amazing with the words to her songs. Genius, really.

And last, here's St. Vincent:

I wanna go to Paris,I wanna go to Paris, I wanna go to Paris, I wanna go to Paris,I wanna go to Paris....If I say it enough times will it happen?

a gift from france

One of my flickr contacts, Riana, sent me a sweet package. She is an incredibly inspiring woman and you can view her flickr stream here. She not only posts images of her life in France but writes a great deal about her daily experience and philosophy. For at least the past couple years she has hopped off the consumer treadmill and lived a slow life. She buys very little food and feeds her family plus countless neighbors from her garden, from foraging and from collecting food which is destined for the dumpster. In addition, She has been renovating an old house and it's quite beautiful.

She's been thinking about taking a break from the computer world and may not have new content for awhile but there is plenty in her past stream to explore. If you are interested in any of the things I mentioned and not already familiar with her I'd recommend going over to flickr and checking it out.

As a side note, her sister is Novella Carpenter, the author of the book "Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer". It's a great book and you can read about her here.
